A study published in the International Journal of obesity reveals that people were 30 per cent less likely to be obese for each hour of sleep they got. Over six years researchers led by Simona Bo at the University of Turin followed more than a thousand middle-aged adults and found that sleep habits were linked to the risk of obesity. Past studies have also linked sleep deprivation with getting fatter, with some believing that people suffering from sleep deprivation may eat or drink more to try and boost energy levels, or that hormones are in some way affected by sleep loss. "Relatively unexplored contributors to the obesity and diabetes epidemics may include sleep restriction, increased house temperature, television watching, consumption of restaurant meals, use of air-conditioning and use of antidepressant/antipsychotic drugs," stated the Italian research.
