Bunk Bed FAQS
What is a bunk bed?
A bunk bed is a fun yet practical solution that features two beds stacked vertically, meaning two sleepers can snooze while occupying the same floorspace! This is especially brilliant for young siblings or kids who love a good sleepover, but also great for parents as bunk beds let you free up some room for extra furniture and storage in your child’s bedroom.
Bunk beds are often confused with the other space-efficient bed design: the high sleeper bed. High sleepers have a higher sleeping platform than the standard bunk bed and tend to feature a desk, wardrobe or chest of drawers underneath the top bunk rather than another bed.
What types of bunk beds are available?
Classic Bunk Beds
You know what they say: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The classic bunk bed is a timeless design for the ages and if you’re looking for a simple stacked single bed bunk bed frame, look no further. We’ve got you covered. Hello floorspace!
Bunk Beds with Storage
Yes we want our bunk beds to be amazing for kids, but we want them to be a dream for parents too. Enter, storage bunk beds. To ensure you’re getting the most out of your new bunk bed, opt for one of our storage designs which offer only the best storage solutions, including built-in shelves, trundles, underbed drawers and even wardrobes in some cases! Messy rooms with toys and clothes strewn in every corner will be firmly in your past with one of these beautiful storage bunk beds.
Triple Bunk Beds
Triple bunk beds give you much more bang for your buck! Rather than two single beds stacked on top of one another, our triple bunk beds instead feature a single top bunk positioned over a bottom double bed bunk. Say goodbye to blow-up beds for sleepovers – three is never a crowd here!
Reversible Bunk Beds
Reversible bunk beds, such as our Tordera Bed, are a contemporary take on the classic bunk bed which transform your children’s bunk bed into a multifunctional space. Versatile and space-saving, these reversible designs, provide flexibility in how you’d like to arrange the beds to suit the space’s layout. The multifunctional element presents itself in the addition of cleverly built in cupboards, drawers, shelving and even small desks around your bunk bed to provide a functional and stylish sleeping solution.
What size bunk beds are available?
Bunk beds are always a popular choice for kids' rooms, but just like any bed, each individual bed frame can be distinct in size and shape. A typical bunk bed however, will be about 65 inches from the floor so make sure you measure your room to make sure you have enough space for your child to clamber up and down safely.
As for the actual floorspace a bunk bed takes up, a traditional bunk stacks its single bed frames one on top of the other, like our New England White Bunk Bed which measures 100 cm in width and 197 cm in length. For something different, the Portland Grey Bed Frame With Liv & Lou Guest Underbed comes with an extra space saving sleep station which can be rolled out with ease and the Montana Triple Bunk comes with a double bed on the base.
What colour bunk bed options are there?
Our gorgeous range of bunk beds come in a wide array of designs and colours to suit the fancy of every growing kid! From whites to greys, pinks to blues and natural light wood finishes, you’re sure to find a colour option that blends seamlessly with your child’s bedroom design.
Are bunk beds safe?
When assembled properly and used responsibly by children of an appropriate age, bunk beds are very safe. Just make sure you read the assembly instructions carefully! We’d recommend setting a few bunk bed ground rules before your child/children use their bunks to avoid any silly accidents. For example, you should ensure they always use the ladder when climbing down from the top bed and dissuade them from jumping on the bunk beds altogether.
For extra safety precaution, it’s also crucial to think about the positioning of the bunk bed in your child’s bedroom. Always make sure there’s more than enough room between the top bunk and the ceiling, any overhead lighting or other pieces of furniture. Be sure to check a child can not become trapped between the bed and the wall, ceiling or adjoining pieces of furniture, too.
Other safety features have been considered too. All of our Time4Sleep bunk beds are produced in accordance with the following standards to ensure children sleep soundly:
- Slats beneath each mattress must be less than 7.5 cm apart
- Guardrails must feature on both sides
- Guardrails must be a minimum of 10 cm taller than the mattress on the top bunk
- A 300mm gap on the top bunk must be included for access
- All gaps above the height of 830 cm should be smaller than 75 mm and larger than 60 mm
- Steps on the ladder must be a minimum of 3 cm wide and 20 cm apart
What ages are bunk beds appropriate for?
We strongly recommend that the upper bunk on a bunk bed should only be used by children aged six and above due to the height from the floor. The bottom bunk is suitable and safe for children younger than six, however, as it is much closer to the ground.
Bunk beds aren’t just for little kids either! They’re great for older kids as they enter into their early teenage years as they’re amazing for sleepovers. All you need to do is get them some more grown up bedding as they get older – result!
What size mattress do you need for a bunk bed?
The majority of bunk beds take a standard UK single mattress, while others may on the rare occasion require a smaller continental size mattress. At Time4Sleep, our bunk beds usually require a mattress that is 1905 mm long and 915 mm wide, but be sure to read the specific dimensions for the bunk bed you have your eye on.
More importantly, there is a limit on the depth of the top bunk mattress for health and safety reasons. The main reason being your child doesn’t roll out of bed! The mattress must not be higher than the safety barriers on the sides of the bunk bed; on our bunk beds for example, the top of the mattress needs to be at least 160 mm below the edge of the safety barriers. To be crystal clear on what the height of the mattress should be, look out for a mattress safety height sticker. This will feature on the top bunk side rail and include details about the recommended depth of a mattress suitable for your particular bunk bed.
Bunk beds do not require a particular or special type of mattress – memory foam or pocket sprung is absolutely fine, the more pressing issue is just the size and height!
