What is an Alaskan King Bed?

No doubt you’ve heard of a California King Bed, but have you heard of an Alaskan King Bed? Colossal in every sense of the word, Alaskan Kings are extremely rare on the market due to their sheer size, custom nature and expense.

Here, we take a look into everything you need to know about Alaskan King Beds, from their size dimensions, to their pros and cons.

What is an Alaskan King Bed?

The height of luxury, these bed frames take inspiration from their enormous North American namesake, Alaska. But, just how large is an Alaskan King Bed?

Leaving other king beds shrinking in its shadow, the Alaskan King measures in at 275cm (9ft) wide and 275cm (9ft) long. As we said, enormous! In fact, as you can see from our bed size table below, the Alaskan King is almost a metre wider than a SDime

Dimensions Alaskan King Super King King Double
Width 275cm 180cm 150cm 135cm
Length 275cm 200cm 200cm 190cm

What are the benefits of an Alaskan King Bed?

Family Friendly

If you have a young, big family that loves to snuggle up, an Alaskan King Bed is a great option for you. You’ll all fit in with room to spare! And that goes for furry little friends too.

Abundant Space

Now this is obvious, but if you share your bed with a partner, you’ll know the struggles of duvet hogging and interesting sleeping positions. With a bed of this magnitude, those worries are over. You can sleep in whatever way you like, even starfish! Plus, if you and your partner favour different mattress firmnesses, zip and link mattresses of varying support levels can be used to satisfy you both. Perfect for tall sleepers or as the focal point of a very large bedroom, Alaskan Kings are large and in charge.

Luxurious Look

With their boutique hotel aesthetic, Alaskan King Beds are a chic spectacle to behold. Who could possibly resist crawling under the covers of such a gargantuan snuggle station? If you’re after a centrepiece with the wow factor, look no further.

Disadvantages of an Alaskan King Bed

Expensive

There’s a reason why Alaskan King Beds are most commonly found in fancy hotels or the bedrooms of the rich and famous. These frames come with quite a hefty price tag and it's not hard to see why when you consider the sheer amount of materials used to build them. And that’s before you even consider the cost of the gigantic mattress you’ll be needing too! If you’re after something more cost-effective but still more than generous in size, we’d recommend one of our stunning Super King Beds instead.

Impractical

While it may sound dreamy in theory, there is such a thing as “too big” and an Alaskan King Bed may well be far too big for your home in practice. These bed frames require a very large space to house them and even then they will take up a considerable amount of space when you consider they take up around 7.5 square metres! That space could be better serviced by extra storage furniture or even a small seating area for another place to relax in your bedroom.

Rare

While custom options are available, Alaska King Beds aren’t very readily available on the market and rather hard to come by. This is especially true for bedding and other soft furnishings too, which also come with quite a high price tag due to their rarity, size and custom nature.
