Sleep

The importance of a good night's sleep should not be overestimated, particularly for athletes: and that's why one NFL team has brought in the experts to ensuring the guys are performing at their best. The New York Jets, who recently triumphed over division rivals the Miami Dolphins in sweltering heat, may have gained the extra edge from coach Rex Ryan's decision to push back the team's schedule by 90 minutes the previous week, giving them more time to sleep and appear for training more relaxed and energised. "We've had sleep people come in, talking about how important sleep is, how important it is to get eight hours of it," he said. "We bring in these specialists for a reason. I just think it's wise to do that, listening to people with a lot more knowledge than myself about it. If we can gain a little advantage, then we're going to look for it." As well as getting more time in bed, the team were instructed to stay well-hydrated all week - something that may have helped them combat the strain of the Florida sun. The team went home with a 23-20 overtime win, so Coach Ryan's sleep tactics seem to have paid off!
