For some people, bed-making is a daily morning ritual, just as important as showering and brushing your teeth – while for others, it’s fair to say that it doesn’t rank quite so highly on the priorities list. But there are benefits to making your bed every morning. It’s not just that it looks nicer, and gives you a welcoming, comfy bed to look forward to after a long day (although it does do both those things!) Making your bed can also make you more productive in general. Perhaps no-one put it better than William McRaven, a US Naval Admiral who clearly knows a thing or two about bedmaking: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. “By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.” Words to live by – and if you want to know how to make a bed like a pro, find out right here. Young woman making bed at home How to Make Your bed: Step by Step 1. Clear the bed and fit the fitted sheet You need to see what you’re working with, so take off all the pillows, duvet, top sheet, teddy bears and so on. Leave the fitted sheet on, and check if any part of it has come loose during the night: if it has, tuck it back under the mattress corner by corner, ensuring it fits evenly at each edge. The fitted sheet should fit the mattress like a glove, with no visible creases or wrinkles. If it doesn’t, you might have the wrong size for your mattress. 2. Add the top sheet Not everyone uses a thicker top sheet over the fitted sheet, but they’re vital if you want that “sinking into a luxury hotel bed” experience. Align the top of the sheet with the head of the mattress and spread the sheet over the mattress so that each side hangs down an equal length. Then, lift up the mattress slightly at each side and tuck the top sheet under it. Start tucking in at the foot of the bed, then move on to the sides. Getting those perfect “hospital corners” is an art form in itself – there are plenty of videos online that show you how it’s done! 3. Add the duvet and fold down Your duvet or blanket is now ready to go on the bed. Again, make sure it’s spread evenly over the mattress, overhanging an equal length on each side, and leave about six inches between the top edge of the duvet and the head of the bed. Now take the top sheet and fold it neatly down so that it covers the top of the duvet, leaving just enough room for the pillows. 4. Pillow time If your pillows are the fluffing-up kind, now’s the time to give them a shake before putting them into place above the duvet. You’re ready to go! Finish off with any additional comforters or cushions you like to have, and you can go about your day in the knowledge that you have a comfy, well-made bed to look forward to at the end of it.
