82821237 Getting sufficient, undisturbed sleep not only has a positive effect on your energy levels but can also facilitate and enhance your complex cognitive skills such as decision-making, according to research published last week. Experts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst investigated the effects of sleep on decision-making by observing 54 participants during a casino-type card game. They found that people who had a normal night’s sleep tucked up in bed drew from decks that gave the greatest winnings four times more often than those who spent the 12-hour break awake, and they better understood the rules of the game. Rebecca Spencer, psychologist at the centre, said: “There is something to be gained from taking a night to sleep on it when you’re facing an important decision.”
