Sleep

As National Bed Month is officially upon us, we look at the myriad ways in which you can change your sleep for the better. Possibly the most important component for a good night's sleep is your mattress, so we're going to take a look at why swapping to a new mattress could help send you into the best night's sleep you ever dreamed of…
  • Why should you change your bed every seven years? If you spend on average eight hours per night in bed, over the course of a year that’s almost 3,000 hours. Over a seven-year period, that's a whopping 20,440 hours spent in bed. In other words, that’s a lot of duvet time and very good reason to change your mattress sooner rather than later!
  • Brainpower. Sleep is essential, we all know that. But have you ever considered just how important it is for your cognitive performance? The amount of sleep we get each night has an impact on our mood, appetite, concentration and productivity. If we skimp on sleep, we're not going to be the happiest human beings. So if we want to achieve the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night, we should do whatever we can to make our bedrooms, and specifically our beds, as comfortable as possible. A new mattress may be all it takes to ensure a fantastic night's sleep, and an alert state of mind.
  • Who wants aches and pains? The saying goes that prevention is better than cure, and this really does ring true when it comes to back pain. A firm, supportive mattress will not only relieve back pain, it’ll help to stop you suffering in the first place. Try to bear in mind that the wrong mattress can also affect your posture, so it really is worth doing your research to find a new mattress which cradles your body correctly.
  • Wear and tear. Like any other piece of furniture you own, your mattress will inevitably suffer some wear and tear. But unlike your kitchen table, your mattress just won’t last that long. Whether your bed is made up of pocketed springs or foam, these materials will bend, stretch, and eventually become misshapen over time.
  • What else can I do to get a good night's sleep? To improve the quality of your sleep, a new mattress is a great place to start. But it's always worth thinking about the other ways in which you can make your bed the perfect place to rest and unwind. Just as your mattress becomes worn out over time, so do your pillows and duvet. Do some investigation work to find the right bedding for you, as duvets come in a range of tog ratings and fillings. Investing in the right mattress and bedding will help to ensure you're well on your way to attaining sleep nirvana.
  • Ever heard of a memory foam mattress? I’m sure you have, but the memory foam mattress is a relatively recent invention. New mattress models hit the market every year, so after seven years you’re more than likely to find a more comfortable and supportive mattress than the last. These days there are plenty of mattresses to suit every taste, whether you prefer a firmer sleeping surface or one that perfectly moulds around your shape. Just take your pick!
