The most challenging part of being a parent is surely coping with the frequently disrupted notion of sleep. This is at least true for actress and writer Amy Poehler – best known as Lesley Knope on American mockumentary-style comedy Parks and Recreation – as the Huffington Post reports ahead of her anticipated interview with Elle Magazine. “Now that I have kids, I’m up at 5:30AM no matter what," Amy comments in her Elle interview. "Sleep at this point is just a concept, something I’m looking forward to investigating in the future." This is a sentiment undoubtedly echoed across the lives of many parents out there. Whilst it's usually just a waiting game until your child becomes old enough to sleep through the night without needing feeds or a nappy change, a carefully planned bedtime for your child could really help your chances of snoozing right through to a more reasonable time. Simple things like ensuring any electronic or overly exciting toys and games are out of your child's way an hour or so before bedtime can really help according to WebMD. The importance of a relaxing routine is not to be underestimated either, with bath time, getting into pyjamas and reading a book together noted as important ways of winding your child down for the night. It's also a case of non-negotiation – don't let bedtimes slip as a 'treat', as a solid routine isn't a punishment. Kids generally run around just as much, if not more on weekends, so sleep for them – and you – is as essential then as in the week.
