200512535-001While many people may not see their mattresses as a fast-moving platform, it certainly seems to be turning into one of the more popular means of transport. Last weekend (July 16th), racers in Minneapolis once again held a contest to see whose bed could get down the streets of Maple Grove in the quickest time. Teams sponsored by Domino's Pizza, Jimmy Johns and Liberty Mutual were among the racers taking part in the contest and each raised in excess of £100 each, with all proceeds going to charity. Ultimately, the title would be taken by Brothers Home Improvement, who beat Jimmy Johns - last year's champions. However, deluxe bed racing is not just the preserve of those living Stateside. Every year, people in Yorkshire host the Great Knaresborough Bed Race, running the event each and every June in the beautiful market town. In 2011, a whopping 90 teams took part and raised well over £80,000 for charities and community causes. It's far from easy, too; running for miles through the popular tourist destination, runners must push the beds along narrow country lanes and, at one point, they have to climb through the River Nidd with their beds in tow!
