Sleep

Finding a bedtime routine that suits your baby in their early years is definitely something of a learning curve. There are some natural ways that can help relax your child though, as Sara Campbell writes on Yahoo Lifestyle. She tells the story of her son as a baby, and that he used to have skin cream rubbed in after baths because of his dry, cracked skin. She noticed that this made him relax and even seem drowsy. From here, she learnt more about baby massage, and has cultivated a massage routine with her son that really does help him drift off for a night of deep sleep. "Setting everything up before you start will mean you can relax and enjoy bonding with your baby, rather than running around the room afterwards when you realise you've forgotten to set out your baby's nappy or pyjamas for afterwards," Sara comments. Once you've created a clear, safe space for your baby to lie, make sure your massage oils or cream and extra towels are close to hand, too. Sara then goes on to describe the method required to properly massage your baby. "Warm a little oil or cream between your palms and gently rub into your baby's legs; use a milking motion applying gentle to medium pressure depending on the age of your baby," Sara adds. "A young baby will need only a very light squeezing motion, six months and over and your baby may need a firmer hand to feel the benefits of the massage." Starting with their feet, move onto the palms, arms and chest areas for as long as your baby will allow. Once they're suitably chilled out, gently dress them and move them to their sleeping space for the night – enjoy your relaxed bonding time with your baby, and you might find you get to sleep a little more too!
